With 'RVIII: Invocation', Dana Wachs and George Clarke have created 20 minutes of experimental ambience that separates itself into five movements, each a vital part of its overall subject. RVIII: Invocation was created for Rural Violence III, an multimedia art project that takes place in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on August 5th and 6th and features other notable artists Angel Deradoorian, Lionel Maunz, Matthew Barney, and John Sharian. Rural Violence III, which was written and directed by Brandon Stosuy, loosely shapes the story of Matthew Shepard alongside a meditation on the violence of the natural world. It’s the third installment of Stosuys’ on-going Rural Violence project, which focus on cycles of violence and the implications of violence.
Brandon Stosuy, who took the lyrics for 'RVIII: Invocation' from a rune poem focusing on death and rebirth and provided them to Wachs and Clarke, said of the Rural Violence project, "We use the term ‘rural violence,’ not only in the sense of small-town crime, packs of skinheads, the KKK—it’s also the violence of nature. The moment after salmon spawn, and their corpses pile up in the shallows of a river. It’s eerie, but gorgeous, and also mundane. We're looking at some moments that feel violent, but also maybe beautiful, and then we’re suspending and zooming in. We’re also ritualizing these things in a very human sense.” He adds that RVIII will ask viewers to consider: destruction verses creation; humanity’s animalistic instincts such as dominance, submission, struggle, and proliferation; persecution of the innocent; awareness of our participation in violence and destruction when it's sanitized for us via food production, war, and nearly all luxuries; tensions created between what is natural and what is amoral; and death and destruction leading to life and enlightenment.
The entire piece has been released digitally through a $5 or pay-what-you-want download with all of the proceeds from the downloads being directly donated to The Matthew Shepard Foundation which focuses on LGBTQ rights and youth awareness.

For me: this live album has the best rendition of Vertigo. Sunbather's mixing of Vertigo close to a decade ago didn't do Deafheaven's vocal performance well, but this live album blew it out of the park with how crisp-clean the range of frequencies are. hills.
A combination of looping, spacial effects, and modular synthesis turns modern classical sounds into submerged, haunting ambient. Bandcamp New & Notable Feb 20, 2024

Jordan Vauvert
